Democracy School:
-
Teaches citizens and activists how to reframe exhausting and discouraging single-issue work (increasing the minimum wage; opposing toxic dumps, quarries, fracking, mines, factory farms, etc.) in a way that confronts corporate control on a powerful single front: peoples’ constitutional rights.
-
Explores the limits of conventional “regulatory” organizing and offers a new organizing model that helps citizens confront corporations’ usurpation of the rights of communities, people, and the earth.
-
Covers the history of people’s movements, the rise of corporate power, and the dramatic increase in organizing in Colorado and other states by communities confronting fracking, GMOs, workers’ rights, minimum wage, agribusiness, sewage sludge, mining, and other corporate projects and issues.
Built around carefully designed readings, clear presentations, and group discussions, the school shows how the law enables corporate managers to dictate their values and impose their projects on unwilling communities, how the judicial system gave corporations the rights of persons, and how peoples’ movements have–and can–win this struggle.
