Hydraulic fracking otherwise known as hydraulic fracturing is a process in which fractures or cracks in shale rock below the earth’s surface are opened and widened by injecting liquids and chemicals at high pressure: this method is used especially to extract fossil fuels, oil and natural methane gas for energy. The existence of fossil fuels such as oil and gas in shale deposits has been known since the 19th Century. All fossil fuels contain carbon and are the remains of plants and animals that lived and died hundreds of millions of years ago; they were formed as a result of geologic exposure to intense heat and pressure over thousands of years.
