BLM hearing on coal leases

August 18, 2015 @ 11:30 am - 4:00 pm

Right now, over 40% of the coal that is mined in the United States comes from public lands controlled by the Obama Administration, who continues to allow it to be leased and burned by the coal industry.

Extracting this coal from public lands ignores the warnings of climate scientists, who have told us over and over again that 80% of fossil fuels must stay in the ground if we are going to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Despite the clear science and the impacts of climate change we’re seeing every day, the Obama Administration continues to sell public lands to coal companies. But here’s the good news: President Obama’s Bureau of Land Management, which sells government-owned coal reserves to the fossil fuel industry, is holding listening sessions across the country to discuss the future of coal extraction on public lands.

On Monday, one of these sessions will be held in Denver, and we have a huge opportunity to send the federal government a clear message: it’s time to keep fossil fuels in the ground!

We’ll need a big crowd to make sure our message gets across. Think you can join?
