A forum with former Mora County, New Mexico, Commissioner John Olivas (Mora was the nation’s first county to ban fracking); Doug Good Feather, Standing Rock Lakota Sioux Nation, a member of the Hunkpapa tribe, and spiritual leader of Spirit Horse Nation, a human rights and environmental protection organization; and Lafayette City Councilor Merrily Mazza.

In January of 2016 the people of Lafayette, Colorado introduced the “Climate Bill of Rights and Protections” for adaptation to the Lafayette City Council. The ordinance will codify the right to a healthy climate and protects this right through community community-led, nonviolent direct action should government fail to recognize this right. It is based on the First Nation principle of protecting the environment for seven generations and was introduced by Councilors Merrily Mazza and Gustavo Reyna. If adopted Lafayette will join Grant Township Pennsylvania, who passed a similar ordinance to protect their community from injection wells that dispose of toxic liquid drilling waste.

The moratorium on fracking in Boulder County expires on May 1, 2017, and the state attorney general is now threatening to sue over that short respite.  Industry must be eager to start drilling on our open space.  It’s on.

East Boulder County United has held three Direct Action trainings in the past two months. All three have filled to capacity with hardly any advertising. Suddenly, we’ve got a highly-trained crew of energetic folks who are fed up and ready to stand for their rights.

We’ve had two discussions of our Climate Bill of Rights at the Lafayette City Council, with fantastic turnout and massive local coverage including articles in Boulder Weekly, Colorado Independent, The Daily Camera, and The Denver Channel.
