PUC meeting on Net Metering

July 24, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Next Thursday, July 24th, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) will hold the first of three public workshops to discuss the future of net metering in Colorado.  We need to pack the room and send a clear message to the Commission that we are paying attention, and that we demand a fair and thorough accounting of rooftop solar’s many benefits. Learn more about the background on this issue below.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Show up: Join us on July 24th at 9:00am in downtown Denver. We’ll have T-shirts and other goodies for you. RSVP now!
  • Show your support on social media: If you can’t make it to the Commission please post this message to twitter and facebook: I’m a CO voter urging you to stand strong for rooftop solar & net metering #COsolarRights #copolitics

Background on the net metering issue: Coloradans overwhelmingly support state policies like net metering that make solar more accessible and more affordable. Like rollover minutes, net metering gives renewable energy customers fair credit on their utility bills for the excess clean power they contribute to the grid. This private investment in solar is delivering real benefits to all Coloradans by reducing the need for Xcel and other utilities to invest in expensive, polluting power infrastructure. However, the policy isn’t good for Xcel’s bottom line and the company has been attacking the policy for over a year now. Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of solar support last year, our Public Utility Commission agreed to table Xcel’s proposal to dismantle net metering and instead opened a new, separate process to take a good look at this critically important solar program. That new process kicks off on July 24th. Xcel is up to its same old shenanigans in this new process: trying to game the system to make solar look like a bad deal in a thinly veiled attempt to make it harder for Coloradans to go solar. By showing up at the Commission and taking to social media we will ensure that Colorado’s solar future is bright.
