‘Trade’ forum – stop the TPP

December 14, 2014 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Attend this community forum to defeat the treacherous trade treaties: defend the rule of law, representative government, the Public Commons, and a viable future!

Trade treaties (The Trans-Pacific Partnership, TTP, and Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Treaty,TTIP) are being negotiated in secret by 600 corporate representatives without disclosure to Congress or the public. “Fast track” legislation will be attempted to quickly pass it without debate. President Obama has pledged to make treaty passage his priority, despite resistance from Democrats. Obama and the new Republican Senate majority have indicated they may try to pass the TPP treaty during Congress’ lame duck session before the New Year. If passed, these treaties will unravel and trump rule of law, representative government, publicly run programs and the Public Commons (including clean air and water and a viable future)!

The forum speakers:

  • Laura Avant, organizer of MoveOn Denver will present an overview of the treaties, objections raised by various nations, and actions planned to resist treaty passage.
  • Michelle Swenson, Denver author of the book Democracy Under Assault, and author of several articles on the TPP and other trade treaties on Huffington Post, will discuss corporate- legislative collusion and impacts to representative governance.
  • Sonia Skakich-Scrima will present a theatrical rendition of Mother Jones: “The Fighting Spirit of Mother Jones: “Back to Agitate” A theatrical rendition invoking Mother Jones’ fighting spirit, to reflect on some of the critical social justice issues and daunting odds of her time, as well as those of our time, challenging all present to agitate and organize for the Common Good.,
